As with the other quizzes, this questionnaire is not intended to diagnose intestinal permeability, but if you score high on this self-test**, you may have Leaky Gut Syndrome. Leaky gut, or intestinal permeability, means that the lining of the intestines have been damaged by a variety of insults causing an imbalance between the “good” and “bad” bacteria in the gut. Our good bacteria are critical for many things, including producing many nutrients, lowering inflammation, supporting proper metabolism of food, absorption of nutrients and many neuromuscular functions. Imbalances, or dysbiosis, result in chronic inflammation which affects the tight junctions between the cells in the intestine. Typically, the tight junctions keep the cells tightly joined, but when compromised, larger particles than normal (including partially digested food particles), can leak through the lining triggering an immune response, which can cascade into many of the issues noted below.
