New Years Resolutions nearly always include weight loss, and this year will be no different! But weight loss is NOT just calories in = calories out anymore! Functional Medicine looks at the imbalances in all body systems and works to find the root causes of those imbalances and correct them so that the body can heal itself.
So whether its weight loss, or fatigue, or unexplained aches and pains, or mood issues or more, we’re focusing on the balance of good and bad bacteria in your intestines! Yes, the gut microbiome is at the forefront of our quest for optimizing our health in 2016! As a matter of fact, we now call this conglomeration of bacteria living in symbiotic harmony within us, a “new” body system! And we are seeing that the types and balance of bacteria in the gut affect everything from our metabolism, to inflammation, to production of certain vitamins, to cancer protection, to brain function and neurotransmitter balance and more.
If your gut isn’t health, you are not healthy! It is true. Now the mainstream medical field is understanding this core concept that the integrative field has been talking about for years.
A study in the journal GUT last year looked at a specific microbe living in the gut called Akkermansia muciniphila. One study found that this microbe, although contributing only about 2-5% of the gut bacteria, seems to be linked to a healthier blood sugar (glucose) metabolism and healthy weight in mice. Consequently, it seems to also help prevent both obesity and type 2 diabetes. So researchers did a study with humans and measured the amount of Akkermansia muciniphila in participants, along with blood sugar measures, blood lipids (fats), and other health risk parameters (like waist to hip ratio and body composition).
Participant who had more A. muciniphila to start had over 100x more than those with lower levels, and their basic metabolic profile was much better than those with low numbers. AND, they responded better to a weight loss/ health program than those with low numbers, including eating interventions! More studies are being done with obese and diabetic patients this year.
We know that every person has a different makeup of gut bacteria.. no two people are the same. About one third of our gut bacteria are similar, but the other two-thirds are made up of different blends of bacteria for different people. There is much to learn about this new field of medicine, but what we do know, is getting your gut healthy should be one of your top goals for ultimate health in 2016!
If we look at your health history timeline, would we see a link between your gut health and your health struggles you have today? We specialize in gut health using a Functional Medicine approach to healing. Let us help you get on track in 2016!
After all, today is the first day of the rest of your life!
