Unique to the Integrative and Functional Medicine field are tools that can help to specifically identify imbalances in a patient’s physiology , providing powerful information we can use to fine-tune your personalized program. This is what we call “Individualized Healthcare” and it has been called the Medicine of the 21st Century.
OHS offers a variety of specialized tests. We get a lot of information during the “discovery” period from the initial patient paperwork and in our discussion of your history, family history and current situation. But sometimes, opting to run a specialty test will identify more specific information that we can use to assess and then adjust your program, more effectively moving you in the direction of healing.
Here are a sample of some of the specialty tests we offer:
SpectraCell’s Micronutrient testing
This panel gives us a ton of information about where you are nutritionally and how strong a foundation you have! Nutritional balance is the key to health. You can’t build a house without a strong foundation – and nutrients are the foundation of a strong body. Nutritional balance not only plays a key role in optimal wellness, it also works in chronic disease prevention and in managing the aging process.
Nutrients fuel our metabolic pathways, and they are essential for proper function of every system of the body. This panel measures the intracellular function of 35 nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids within our WBC, the lymphocytes. It is different than a standard nutrient deficiency test, which measures the amount of a nutrient in the blood at a particular moment in time. That measure can be affected by many things, including what you recently ate. Additionally, the amount in the blood does not tell us if the nutrient is getting into the cell and if it is actually functioning as it should be.
SpectraCell’s Micronutrient panel, on the other hand, looks inside the cell to see how the nutrient is actually functioning to give us a more accurate look at nutritional status. Because the test uses lymphocytes, which have a lifespan average of 4-6 months, we get a look at your nutritional status over the last 5-6 months and not just for a particular moment in time. It is the only test like this available.
The test panel also includes an independent test that gives an Immune Response Score, and another for Total Antioxidant Function.
I believe nearly everyone would benefit from this test as part of a full nutritional assessment, but in particular those suffering from stress, fatigue, depression/anxiety, use of prescription medications (which often deplete nutrients overtime), any medical condition, immune function issues, GI issues, or who want to be proactive in their quest for a higher level of wellness would be good candidates for the test.
(Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Testing)
This advanced cardiovascular risk testing could save your life… or the life of someone you love! Nearly 50% of those that have a heart attack have normal cholesterol! This panel is different from the standard cholesterol testing. Instead of just measuring the total amount of cholesterol and the total HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol, it goes much further, measuring the particle sizes and numbers of the different lipid parameters. There are several types of LDL and HDL cholesterol, and the numbers of each, and the size of the particles, all affects their protective effect, or level of risk they confer. Standardized testing will miss risk factors that this test will identify!
Those who may benefit from this test include those with a family history of heart disease; those diagnosed with heart disease; those with diabetes or metabolic syndrome; on cholesterol lowering medication; overweight and obesity; and those with standard testing that shows low HDL, high LDL or high triglycerides.
This panel also includes fasting insulin, Lp(a) (an independent genetic risk factor); and RLP (another genetic risk factor not commonly tested).
SpectraCell’s PreDiabetes panel
In Functional Medicine, we work to identify imbalances before outright disease, so that we can work to bring the body back into balance and into health. This PreDiabetes panel measures several parameters that will help to define a progression towards Type II diabetes. These parameters, along with an overall pre-diabetes risk score, help to show that it is a constellation of risk factors and physiologic imbalances that contribute to poor blood sugar control. Once identified, therapeutic interventions can begin to stop the progression towards an outright diagnosis of diabetes.
Those who may benefit from this test include having a family history of heart disease; a diagnosis of heart disease; diabetes or metabolic syndrome, taking cholesterol-lowering medications, being overweight, having low HDL and/ or high LDL, or having high triglycerides.
Thyroid Panel along with Reverse T3
Like nutrients, hormones influence all aspects of health and disease including mood, sleep, metabolism, immunity, heart health and appearance. An imbalance in one hormone can initiate a cascade of events that alters other hormones. A full thyroid panel includes not only the TSH and free T4 (the inactive form of thyroid hormone) that is standardly tested, but also includes free T3 (the active form of the thyroid hormone), the autoimmune antibody testing including anti-TG, anti-TPO, TBG , and reverse T3 (which elevates under stress and acts as a “brake” to the system, essentially slowing things down as a protective mechanism).
Alcat Food Sensitivity Testing
There are many parts to the immune system. When an allergy doctor tests for “true” allergies, they are testing for the IgE immunoglobulin. When we talk about food sensitivities, historically, the test was designed to trigger the IgG immunoglobulin. But in reality, there are many other parts of the immune system that may be reacting to foods or other substances, such as IgA, IgM, the Complement system and more.
The Alcat Food Sensitivity Panel measures multiple parts of the immune system to give a “total” reactivity assessment at the cellular level to over 450 substances (200 foods, along with additives, artificial colors, and biological and chemical substances). These immune responses may be responsible for, or contribute to, a multitude of symptoms, including systemic inflammation and pain, weight gain, brain fog, sleep disruption, GI disorders, skin symptoms, neurological symptoms, respiratory issues, metabolic and endocrine disorders, musculoskelatal issues, immune system imbalance and other co-morbid states.
Alcat MethylDetox Profile
The MethyDetox Profile tests for genetic variations in a metabolic process in the body called Methylation. Methionine (an amino acid) is converted in that process to homocysteine (a protein that, at high levels, can create inflammation, risk for clotting, and trigger other physiologic changes that result in a path to changes in the brain linked to Alzheimers).
An enzyme called MTHFR, which works in the pathway, pushes proper methylation and homocysteine metabolism. This pathway is also involved in proper detoxification processes, and is also the pathway that converts the B vitamin folate to its active form.
Some genetic variants of the MTHFR gene (called a genetic SNP) result in tempered function of the enzyme. Other specific SNPs in other genes also contribute to improper methylation and homocysteine metabolism, and elevated levels of homocysteine. This panel also looks at the COMT gene, MTR (affects B12), MTRR (affects SAMe), AHCY (affects SAMe).
Variants in these SNPs might contribute to accelerated aging, certain chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders, impaired gene-regulation, poor drug clearance, and impaired neurotransmitter (mood regulation) metabolism.
Patients with a history or family history of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke, nuerodegenerative disorders like Alzheimers or Parkinsons, poor drug clearance, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic metabolic disorders, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, musculoskeletal disorders, autism spectrum disorder, depression/anxiety, insomnia or the ADD/ADHD/autism spectrum are good candidates for this testing.
Alcat Gut Health Profile
One of my main mantras is “If your gut isn’t healthy, you are not healthy!”
The Gut Health Profile Panel looks at risk of celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, gluten sensitivity and other GI disorders. The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, autoimmune disorders, suspected gluten sensitivity, suspected increased permeability (leaky gut), IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease), and suspected celiac disease would indicate a benefit for testing with the Gut Health Profile Panel.
The panel includes options for testing for HLA-DQ gene typing for celiac disease (HLA DQ2.5 and HLA DQ); IgA and IgG antibodies; anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody (ASCA), associated with Crohn’s disease; Total Serum IgA (the most common immunoglobulin deficiency. Adequate levels are necessary for an accurate immune response reading); Gluten and grain sensitivity reactions at a cellular level to 19 gluten and non-gluten containing grains that may trigger an immune response and resulting inflammation.
Alcat Adrenal Stress Profile
The adrenal glands are responsible for our ability to handle the stress response appropriately. Our modern day lifestyle often keeps us in a chronic “fight or flight” mode, wearing down the adrenal glands and producing what is called “adrenal fatigue”. Fatigued adrenals eventually can’t keep up with the production of the stress chemicals such as cortisol, which affects other hormones downstream, overtime.
This profile measures the function of the adrenal glands by measuring free cortisol and DHEA at various times throughout the day. This provides insight into how the body is handling and responding to stress. Chronic stress can disrupt metabolism and contribute to neurological conditions, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin issues, disruption of thyroid hormone production and balance , and other complications.
Cortisol increases gut permeability (leaky gut), which then contributes to food sensitivities. Food sensitivities triggers an immune response, more inflammation and stress and symptoms in a vicious cycle. This saliva test, repeated over time, can help to identify hormone changes and patterns reflecting a maladaptive stress response, and provides information for therapeutic intervention to support hormonal and systemic balance.
