Unique to the Integrative and Functional Medicine field are tools that can help to specifically identify imbalances in a patient’s physiology , providing powerful information we can use to fine-tune your personalized program. This is what we call “Individualized Healthcare” and it has been called the Medicine of the 21st Century.
OHS offers a variety of specialized tests. We get a lot of information during the “discovery” period from the initial patient paperwork and in our discussion of your history, family history and current situation. But sometimes, opting to run a specialty test will identify more specific information that we can use to assess and then adjust your program, more effectively moving you in the direction of healing.
Here are a sample of some of the specialty tests we offer:
This panel gives us a wealth of information about your physiology and is a key test we use in the nutritional assessment process. Nutritional balance is the key to health. You can’t build a house without a strong foundation – and nutrients are the foundation of a strong body. Nutritional balance not only plays a key role in optimal wellness, it also works in chronic disease prevention and in managing the aging process.
Nutrients fuel our metabolic pathways, and they are essential for proper function of every system of the body. This panel measures the intracellular function of over 30 nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids within our WBC, the lymphocytes, and assesses your immune systems ability to handle inflammation. It is different than a standard nutrient deficiency test, which measures the amount of a nutrient in the blood at a particular moment in time. That measure can be affected by many things, including what you recently ate. Additionally, the amount in the blood does not tell us if the nutrient is getting into the cell and if it is actually functioning as it should be.
SpectraCell’s Micronutrient testing looks inside the cell to see how the nutrient is actually functioning to give us a more accurate look at nutritional status. Because the test uses lymphocytes, which have a lifespan average of 4-6 months, we get a look at your nutritional status over the last 5-6 months and not just for a particular moment in time. It is the only test like this available.
I believe nearly everyone would benefit from this test as part of a full nutritional assessment, including those suffering from any medical condition, dieters, eldering, vegan/vegetarians, those suffering from stress, fatigue, depression/anxiety, use of prescription medications (which often deplete nutrients overtime), immune function issues, GI issues, or who want to be proactive in their quest for a higher level of wellness would be good candidates for the test.
(Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Testing)
SpectraCell’s CardioMetabolic test offers a clinically relevant evaluation to help define risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), progression toward Type 2 Diabetes, and inflammation.
It includes SpectraCell’s Advanced Lipoprotein Particle Profile™ Plus (LPPTM Plus), which measures lipoprotein size and density; cardiovascular risk stratification; and also includes triglycerides and traditional cholesterol screening.
Each patient is assigned a CardioMetabolic Risk Assessment, which is an indication of your risk (Low, Moderate or High) for developing cardiovascular disease, including stroke and diabetes.
In addition, the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment is an estimate of your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. In Functional Medicine, we work to identify imbalances before outright disease, so that we can work to bring the body back into balance and into health before outright disease develops.
The CardioMetabolic test also includes OmegaCheckTM , which measures the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in one’s blood. The higher the content of omega -3 fatty acids, the lower the risk of a fatal heart attack and other inflammatory conditions.
These conditions indicate potential benefit from using this test: a family history of heart disease; a diagnosis of heart disease; diabetes or metabolic syndrome, using cholesterol-lowering medications, overweight, low HDL and/ or high LDL, or having high triglycerides, male sex, or female in menopause, history of chronic stress.
Thyroid Panel along with Reverse T3
Like nutrients, hormones influence all aspects of health and disease including mood, sleep, metabolism, immunity, heart health and appearance. An imbalance in one hormone can initiate a cascade of events that alters other hormones. A full thyroid panel includes not only the TSH and free T4 (the inactive form of thyroid hormone) that is standardly tested, but also includes free T3 (the active form of the thyroid hormone), the autoimmune antibody testing including anti-TG, anti-TPO, TBG , and reverse T3 (which elevates under stress and acts as a “brake” to the system, essentially slowing things down as a protective mechanism).
GENETIC Testing – Genotyping
Reveals genetic markers critical for determining treatment strategies to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic disease conditions. We offer several genetic tests that complement our integrative test menu.
▪ MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase): Mutations in this enzyme can affect the metabolism of homocysteine – causing accumulation – and therefore, impair methylation. Methylation is a biochemical process that is involved in numerous functions including cellular repair, energy production, detoxification, neurotransmitter production, and immunity, among others. MTHFR mutations have been linked to increased risk for cardiovascular disease, blood vessel damage, blood clots (thrombosis), stroke, and degenerative aging.
▪ Apolipoprotein E – This test measures risk for lipid irregularities. The results of this test can help inform lifestyle and treatment strategies to help reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
▪ Factor V Leiden and Prothrombin – The results of this test determine one’s susceptibility to thrombosis (formation of blood clots), deep vein thrombosis, and heart attack.
Food Sensitivity Testing
ALCAT (Cell Sciences)
The Alcat Food Sensitivity Panel measures multiple parts of the immune system to give a “total” reactivity assessment at the cellular level to over 450 substances (200 foods, along with additives, artificial colors, and biological and chemical substances). These immune responses may be responsible for, or contribute to, a multitude of symptoms, including systemic inflammation and pain, weight gain, brain fog, sleep disruption, GI disorders, skin symptoms, neurological symptoms, respiratory issues, metabolic and endocrine disorders, musculoskelatal issues, immune system imbalance and other co-morbid states.
Ever feel like you’ve done everything right and you still can reach your ultimate wellness goals? Looking to optimize your health and fine tune your physiology to be your ultimate best? Look no further, here is the test for you!
Stop fighting your body and get it to work with you! This panel looks at genetic markers for diet, exercise and lifestyle activities that your individual physiology will respond to most optimally. Take the guesswork out of which diet will work for you
Don’t see what you are looking for? We work with a number of specialty labs that offer many other test options. We will be glad to discuss what might be useful for you during your appointment time at the office.
